In humans, the BCL2 gene encodes the BCL-2 (B cell lymphoma 2). Relating to cell death (apoptosis), it is a founding member of the BCL-2 family regulator protein that either induces (pro-apoptotic) or inhibits (anti-cell Apoptosis) apoptosis. It is thought that BCL-2 is a crucial anti-apoptotic protein. However, because it is not a growth signal transducer, it is not regarded as a proto-oncogene. Because it is the second of a group of proteins that were first identified in chromosomal translocations involving chromosomes 14 and 18 in follicular lymphomas, the name BCL-2 is derived from B-cell lymphoma2. Many mammals have been found to have orthologs (such as BCL-2 in mice) for which complete genome data are available.
